About Us
FLUIGRAPHY
There are moments that the human eye cannot see.
Shapes that are born and disappear in less than a thousandth of a second. Ephemeral sculptures that physics offers and takes back even before we have had time to perceive them. Columns of liquid glass, suspended crowns, figures that resemble living beings, perfect rings traced by the water itself.
FLUIGRAPHY is the art of revealing them. Freezing what does not exist. Making visible what disappears. Transforming the chaos of a collision into a permanent sculpture.
Martin Brand
I fell in love with photography in 2000, in the deserts of Utah. The wide-open spaces of the American West taught me something essential: patience. Waiting for the light, waiting for the silence, waiting for the right moment. And being ready when it arrives.
It is this same quality of attention that led me, years later, to a studio, a water basin, and an ultra-precise trigger. Capturing the perfect collision of two drops requires exactly what a sunrise over a canyon demanded: total presence, and a serene acceptance of randomness. You don't decide the shape. You encounter it.
For more than 30 years, I have worked in digital. I witnessed the emergence of Photoshop, digital imagery, and all the tools that have profoundly transformed photography. This technical culture serves a single ambition: that technology disappears behind emotion.
The technique
Every FLUIGRAPHY artwork is the result of a rigorous protocol and an irreducible element of chance.
An ultra-precise electronic triggering system synchronizes the fall of the drops with the flash, to within a few microseconds. The camera, fixed, waits. Hundreds of triggers are necessary to obtain an image worth existing. Most are missed, too early, too late, not beautiful enough. And then, suddenly, the perfect shape appears.
It is this tension between mastery and surprise that makes each image a unique piece.
